12V fridge wire size

Compressor fridges switch off when the voltage at their terminals falls below a set point. Voltage drop in the cable lowers that voltage while the compressor runs, so a thin cable can make the fridge cut out with a healthy battery. Use 3%, and if the manual gives a cable size table, use the thicker of the two.

Watts are converted: amps = watts / volts.
Source to load. The circuit is 2 x this length (out and back).

Use 10 AWG (5.26 mm²) copper or larger.

Voltage drop sets the size. 12 AWG would drop 3.18%, over your 3% limit. Ampacity alone would allow 18 AWG.

Check: 10 AWG (5.26 mm²)

Load current8 A
Wire in the circuit (out and back)2 x 15 ft = 30 ft
Resistance of 10 AWG0.9989 ohm per 1000 ft; 0.02997 ohm for this circuit
Voltage drop0.24 V = 2% within 3%
Voltage at the load11.76 V
Power lost in the wire1.92 W
Ampacity of 10 AWG35 A (NEC 310.16, 75 C) ok

Vd = I x 2L x R / 1000 = 8 x 2 x 15 x 0.9989 / 1000 = 0.24 V, and 0.24 / 12 = 2%. Length L in feet, R in ohms per 1000 ft.

Copper, minimum AWG. * ampacity, not voltage drop, sets this size. "over 4/0" means no single copper conductor up to 4/0 passes: shorten the run, use a higher system voltage or run conductors in parallel. Length is one way; the math uses twice that, out and back.

Worked example

8 A at 12 V, 15 ft one way, 3% drop allowed. The current goes out and comes back, so the circuit is 2 x 15 = 30 ft of wire, and the allowed drop is 12 x 3 / 100 = 0.36 V. Voltage drop is Vd = I x 2L x R / 1000, with R in ohms per 1000 ft:

Answer: 10 AWG (5.26 mm²), rated 35 A, the smallest size that passes both.

Questions

What current should I use for a fridge?

The maximum running current from the manual or label, not the average. The average is far lower because the compressor cycles, but the cable has to carry the running current.
